The sport of weight training is engulfed in many half-truths and myths. There are too may rules and tenets that all add up to distort aspects of the sport way out of proportion. What bodybuilders should realize is that while weight training is a difficult task - and it should be, the underlying principles of bodybuilding are very simple and basic.
There will never be a final word on weight training and bodybuilding. New rules and research will be done by scientists who have never used a dumbbell but the fact is that all these new researches will be grounded in the same never-changing principles of the sport. As for the bodybuilder the most important thing should be the mastery of these basics and then al other things will come later.
Many guys waste time arguing on what style of training is most beneficial. Some suggest that free weights are better than using machines; some suggest that multiple sets are more effective than single sets and so on. What they do not realize however is the fact that most of these routines are similar. What their focus needs to be on is the manner in which positive results can be optimized.
One of the most basic requirements of an effective training program is the need for progressive overload training.
This forms one of the most stable foundations for bodybuilding success. Your goal should always be to improve on your previous capacity. This can be done in a variety of ways whether you use free weights or machines, whether you are doing one set and multiple sets. A productive bodybuilding career should never be static at any one time. Remember that the body muscles always respond to the resistance that is applied in training. If you continually improve upon the resistance/load then your muscles will have no option but to grow in that proportion. Simply remember that your bodybuilding program must have:
* Progression
* Overload and
* Intensity
If you are prepared to add these ingredients to your training regimen then you will never blame the equipment, the method, the supplements or any other common scapegoats that are used by static bodybuilders. Ensure that each and every rep and set that you do is done to perfection. There is no time for lapses. You are supposed to train for a short amount of time and it is best that you get the most out of this.
When designing your training program ensure that whatever you will do is effective, safe, efficient, practical, balanced and purposeful. If any aspect of your proposed workout does not apply to these guidelines then you should strike it out immediately. Remember that you are getting into a hard work zone which has no room for complacency. If you are looking for a comfort zone then you are in the wrong place. Quit well ahead. A decent and productive regimen has no opportunity for shortcuts. You have to do everything by the book. Any sidetracking of this notion will only lead to wasted time and effort.
